ARTIST STATEMENT

When I paint, I slow down. Close observation is essential, but thought, experience, and emotion all shape each painting. Hours slip by as I sit, look, and focus. Light and shadow, color, and shape capture my attention, drawing me fully into the moment. The outside world fades, and my mind is absorbed by the scene before me and by the interplay of water, pigment and the surface of the paper.

Watercolor has a reputation for having a mind of its own, or “painting itself”, with its fluid, unpredictable nature. The artist learns to watch what the paint is doing, to respond, correct, and guide, while allowing its natural beauty to emerge. My hope is that my watercolors convey the same joy and wonder I find in the visual world.

ARTIST BIO

I am a retired computer engineer based in Medford, Massachusetts. I spent my career using mathematics and software to extract meaning from video and images — skills that reflect my lifelong interest in visual imagery. I grew up in a family that encouraged a love of both science and art. My mother was an artist and my father was a pathologiest. After a fulfilling career in engineering, I’m now grateful to focus my time on painting.

I have studied watercolor painting in the Boston area with several teachers, notably Gary Tucker, Marion Hall, and Paul George. My work has been exhibited in many Boston area shows. I am a juried member of the North Shore Art Association, a member of Boston North Artists, Newburyport Art Association, Newton Watercolor Society, New England Watercolor Society, and Arts Medford.
